Double-flowered clematis varieties

Clematis varieties with double and semi-double flowers are few in number – they are about 10% of the total number. Among them there are both large-flowered and small-flowered varieties. These varieties do not have any common features of cultivation.

Albina Plena

Clematis Albina PlenaA Swedish variety obtained by crossing Clematis faureri and Clematis sibirica. Blooms early, from the end of April to the end of May. Winter-resistant, highly decorative and rather unpretentious variety.

  • Pruning Group: 1 (No pruning)
  • Height – 9.8-13.1 feet (3-4 m)
  • Flowers – 2.4…3.1 inches (6…8 cm) in diameter, double-petaled, with white petals and yellow stamens
  • USDA zone – 3-9

Anna German

Clematis Anna German
“Anna Herman” (- a very popular variety with large terry flowers. It is characterized by high variability – the flowers can be different in shape and color. The variety is unpretentious, relatively stable, slowly builds up the root mass, but after the build-up blooms very abundantly.

  • Pruning Group: 2 or 3
  • Height: 2 to 2.5 meters
  • Flowers: Large, up to 20 cm in diameter, with lavender petals and a yellow center
  • Blooming Period: From June to September
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 4-9

Andromeda

Clematis Andromeda
“Andromeda” is a variety with large white-pink flowers, and in regions with a warm long summer they are often semi-marginal. In Michigan and Minnesota, unfortunately, they are not, and in general, this clematis is a bit cold there.

  • Flowers: Large, white-pink, sometimes semi-double
  • Blooming Period: May to July, with a second bloom in September

Azure Ball

‘Azure Ball’ is a brand new variety of clematis with large double light blue flowers. Unfortunately, the shade of blue is not as intense as that of forget-me-nots, but it is still very beautiful.

Clematis AVANT-GARDEA very unusual variety of clematis from the Viticella group, obtained quite by accident. Flowers are small, but there are a lot of them. The variety is frost-resistant, unpretentious, quite resistant to wilting.

  • Flowers: Small, with 4-6 red sepals and pink staminodes
  • Blooming: From July to October
  • USDA Zone: 4-9

Ballet Skirt

Clematis Ballet Skirt 1 pruning group‘Ballet Skirt’ is a very ornamental variety of clematis of the 1st pruning group. Blooms in spring on the shoots of the previous year, a small number of flowers also appear on the shoots of the current year. Can be used for growing in containers and as a ground cover.

  • Height: 4.9-6.6 feet (1.5-2 meters)
  • Flowers: diameter of 1.97-2.36 inches, with light-pink sepals and light-yellow stamens (5-6 cm)

Blue Surprise

Clematis Blue SurpriseThis is a brand new variety of clematis, judging by the photo – absolutely stunning. It is winter hardy and the flowers are relatively small. One of several varieties in the Suprise series.

‘Beauty of Worcester’ is a beautiful but not very winter-hardy clematis. In the conditions of the northern states of the USA, the shoots of the last year often die out completely, and on the shoots of the current year it blooms weakly. However, in Oregon and states with milder climates, as well as in Great Britain, France and most European countries, this variety grows and flowers beautifully.

  • Height: 2 to 3 meters
  • Flowers: Large, simple, semi-double, and double forms
  • Blooming Period: May-June, repeated in August-September

Copernicus

“Copernicus” is a new Polish variety of clematis. It differs from many other varieties with purple flowers by two things: the combination of the third pruning group double flowers and the short length of the stems.

Piilu

‘Piilu’ – is a stunning clematis created in Estonia. Double and single flowers can appear in early summer at the same time. It is quite resistant to winter cold.

  • Flowers: double, semi-double, single up to 2.5″-5″ (6-12` cm) in diameter, pink

Pink Swing

Clematis Pink SwingPink Swing is a rare beauty clematis with double pink flowers, very winter-hardy, does not require pruning. The variety is not very widespread yet, but it is quite realistic to buy it in the USA.

  • Flowers: Medium to large size, up to 4.72 inches in diameter, double, in delicate pink or yellowish-pink shades (up to 12 cm)

Taiga

Taiga is one of the most popular clematis varieties, while not quite suitable for the climate of the northern states. Absolutely gorgeous purple flowers, but winter hardiness zones 7-9, must be very carefully covered.

  • Height – 6.6 to 8.2 feet (2 to 2.5 meters)
  • Flowers – double, up to 6.3 inches (16 cm) in diameter, violet with a greenish tint
  • USDA Hardiness Zones – 7-9

Thyrislund

Clematis Thyrislund
‘Thyrislund’ is a rather old variety of clematis from the 2nd pruning group, not very winter-hardy, but quite pretty. The star-shaped flowers, which bloom in late May, delight the eye for a long time.
